Three years ago Jarrod Kenney and I came to Portland to visit. We loved it so much, Jarrod decided to apply for a position his company had been offering him located here. I desperately wanted out of LA- the traffic, the heat, and mostly I just needed a new music scene. Being originally from San Francisco I found a built-in community of San Francisco ex-pats, friends-of-friends, through which I met Michelle Anne Muldrow, fellow songwriter. Not to mention, a thriving music scene.
Michelle, Jarrod and I immediately hit it off and started collaborating. We played our first show in December 2019, two months after moving here. That's when I knew I was staying.
Of course, in February 2020 the pandemic hit and everything shut down. We spent the last 2 1/2 years writing and perfecting, traveling and recording, Covid circles and late nights, backyard firepits and winter cold rehearsals in a coffee supply warehouse. everything stopped -and yet, there suddenly was the time, time necessary to explore without the pressure of public eyes or public consumption. We turned those moments of distress and uncertainty into opportunity for focusing on what is relevant and The Depressionistas were born.
Last year 2021 we traveled to the south- Water Valley, Mississippi by way of Memphis to record at Dial Back Sound with Bronson Tew, and their amazing crew. We came back to Portland and finished up at singingsandspdx with some great local talent including Teri Untalan on strings.
Super excited for this final product. So many more people to thank! I really hope you enjoy this video! we had a lot of fun making it.
